Plymouth is one of England's great maritime cities, the Barbican waterfront, the Hoe and Plymouth Sound between them create a spectacular setting for a hen weekend. The city has a lively bar and restaurant scene and good accommodation options for groups. It's also the perfect base for exploring the Dartmoor and South Devon coast. Our mixologists cover Plymouth and the wider Devon area.

Plymouth has one of the most dramatic natural settings of any English city. Plymouth Sound, one of the finest natural harbours in the world, with Drake's Island, Mount Edgcumbe and the Devon hills framing it. The Hoe, the grassy clifftop where Sir Francis Drake supposedly finished his game of bowls before defeating the Spanish Armada in 1588, gives extraordinary views across the Sound. The Barbican is the historic heart: a network of Elizabethan cobbled streets, harbourside restaurants and independent bars that has been brilliantly preserved. The National Marine Aquarium is one of the finest in the UK.

Plymouth Hen Party Guide

What to do in Plymouth for a hen weekend

⚓

Plymouth Barbican

The Elizabethan cobbled streets of the Barbican, with their 16th-century buildings, independent bars and harbourside restaurants, are Plymouth at its most distinctive. The Mayflower Steps mark where the Pilgrim Fathers departed for America in 1620.

🌊

Plymouth Hoe & Sound

The Hoe is one of England's most spectacular urban viewpoints, the lighthouse, the Armada Memorial and the open sea views across Plymouth Sound are extraordinary. Tinside Lido, an Art Deco seawater pool, is a brilliant summer hen activity.

🐠

National Marine Aquarium

The UK's largest aquarium is right on Plymouth's harbourfront, the Atlantic reef tank, the shark exhibit and the UK's deepest aquarium tank make it a brilliant group attraction.

🏴‍☠️

Royal Citadel & Maritime Heritage

The 17th-century Royal Citadel stands above the Hoe, guided tours reveal a remarkable piece of English military history. The Mayflower Museum tells the story of the Pilgrim Fathers who departed for America from Plymouth.

Logistics

Planning your Plymouth hen party

📍 Where hens typically stay

Popular bases in Plymouth include Barbican, Hoe, Mutley and Stonehouse, all well suited for large group Airbnbs and short-let houses where we can set up the bar.

Mutley Plain and Peverell have the best large group Victorian houses in Plymouth, spacious terraces with easy access to both the Barbican and the Hoe. Accommodation near the Barbican itself is limited but more characterful.

🍹 What pairs well with a cocktail class

A morning walk along the Hoe with views across Plymouth Sound, exploring the Barbican's independent bars and restaurants, or a day trip to the Dartmoor edge before the evening class.

🚂 Getting there

Plymouth is about 3 hours from London Paddington by train and 45 minutes from Exeter, a natural base for Devon and South West groups.
